Windshield wipers squeak

What it means

Windshield wipers squeak because the rubber wiping edge drags across the glass with too much friction. That friction can come from dirty glass, a dry windshield, a worn blade edge, or weak, uneven arm pressure. If cleaning the glass and blade does not stop the noise, replace the blade before streaks and poor rain clearing follow.

Safety first

  • If the car feels unsafe to drive, stop in a safe place and call roadside assistance or a mechanic. General safety rule, not from the article

Fix it step by step

Try the steps in order, easiest and safest first. After each one, tell us if the problem is gone.

Step 1 of 4

  1. Step 1: Run a short dry wipe and note the soundLow risk
    1. Run a short dry wipe and note the sound.
    2. Apply washer fluid and repeat the wipe.
    3. Clean the glass and the blade edge.
    4. Swap blades side to side if sizes match.
    5. Inspect the rubber edge for cracks or hard spots.
    6. Check wiper arm pressure and alignment against the glass.

Then check whether the problem is still there.

From the guide section: Use this 5-step diagnosis to find the cause

  2. Step 2: Clean glass and blade edge gentlyLow risk
    1. Start with the windshield itself.
    2. Wipe the glass with a proper glass cleaner, then clean the rubber edge gently so you are not dragging grit across it on the next pass.

Then check whether the problem is still there.

From the guide section: How do you keep your windshield wipers from squeaking? > Clean the glass and blade edge

  3. Step 3: Check wiper blade installation and alignmentLow risk
    1. New wiper blades should be checked before assuming they are defective.
    2. Make sure the connector is locked in, the blade faces the correct direction, and the arm sits at the proper angle.

Then check whether the problem is still there.

From the guide section: How do you keep your windshield wipers from squeaking? > Check installation and alignment

  4. Step 4: Still not fixed? See a mechanicLow riskIf nothing else worked
    1. If the steps above did not fix it, have a qualified mechanic inspect the car.
    2. Tell them what you saw, which steps you tried, and any warning lights, noises or smells.
    3. Stop driving and arrange a tow or roadside help if the car feels unsafe: the brakes feel wrong, the engine overheats, steam or smoke appears, or a red warning light stays on.

Then check whether the problem is still there.
